Sony leads the same top ten companies 1/4/2011 2:44:13 PM According to The Patent Board’s Consumer Electronics Patent Scorecard™ published in The Wall Street Journal, gaming companies show the highest influence on the industry.
Sony Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) maintains its top position on the Consumer Electronics Patent Scorecard™ this week with a comfortable lead over all other competitors in the industry. Sony holds the highest Technology Strength™ score by far – over twice as high as the second-ranked competitor and over twelve times higher than the industry average. Sony’s Technology Strength™ is primarily driven by its patent volume, with over 2,000 patents granted in the past year alone. Additionally, Sony holds the highest Science Strength™ score in the industry at almost twenty times the industry average, indicating that Sony’s portfolio is very close to core scientific research. However, Sony’s high score comes not from numerous citations – the most science-reliant patent cites 44 works of scientific literature – but rather from frequent citations spread across a large portion of their portfolio. Nearly one third of Sony’s portfolio cites at least one piece of scientific research.
